Ida O. Helvig Ida (Oster) Helvig, May 1, 1912 - November 14, 2012. Age of 100. Born to Christian and Margaret (VonBergen) Oster in Krem, North Dakota on a farm. Ida lived in Joliet from 1991 until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo Helvig and sons Marvin and Allen. Also preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Ida is survived by children Elaine (Jerry) Armstrong of Joliet, Helen Lawson of Joliet and Mary (Ray) Shinaberger of Port Orchard, Washington. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. Ida was employed by St. Joseph Hospital in Minot, North Dakota as a cook and Marymount Academy in Tacoma, Washington. She was appreciated as an active member in her church quilting and sewing for missions. Ida was known as a wonderful cook and particularly for her pastries. She also was an avid gardener and we remember her for her strong German temperament and quick witted one liners. Loved dearly and tended to faithfully in her elderly years by her daughters and grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family hereby extends their gratitude to Lakewood Nursing Center in Plainfield for their professional and loving care given Ida for the past 18 months. We also humbly express our appreciation to Hospice in serving her with dignity in the last moments with us before passing in her sleep, Wednesday evening at Lakewood. Funeral from the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, Saturday November 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. to the Cathedral of St. Raymond for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial of ashes will be held at Mountain View Memorial Park in Tacoma, Washington at a later date. Visitation will be Saturday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
